Are Multivitamins Necessary For Cornish Kids?

Hello Cornish! Welcome to today’s Cornish children’s nutrition post. I am JJ Birden, and I promote children’s health in Cornish and the 84062 zip code area.

Today’s post discusses children’s vitamins. Many Cornish parents give their kids a chewable or liquid multivitamin. We all know that it is essential for Cornish kids to get sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals and we often give them a pill to fill in nutritional gaps, just in case. Are multivitamins necessary for Cornish kids?

I have found that Cornish pediatricians have varying opinions about this issue. Some Hartland Four Corners children’s doctors recommend parents give their children vitamins in pill form or at least don’t discourage it.

More importantly, Cornish pediatricians urge parents to feed their children a variety of nutritious foods, presumably because vitamins and minerals in foods are better absorbed.

Make sure the multivitamin is designed for your child’s age group.
Choose one that provides 100 percent of the daily value (DV) for all vitamins and minerals.
Store multivitamins out of your child’s reach and make it clear that they are not candy.
Don’t use multivitamins as a replacement for proper nutrition.1

Something not so well known in Brownsville is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Brownsville – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes Texas kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Brownsville kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Brownsville neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

'Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!' Do your children’s Hartland Four Corners school teachers reward good behavior with candy or cookies? Don’t you think it’s a little strange to reward Brownsville children with something that is bad for them?

Using unhealthy food as a token of merit undermines Hartland Four Corners nutrition education and encourages over-consumption of foods high in added sugar and fat. It can also set a precedent for emotional eating, prompting Texas kids to eat when they’re not really hungry.

According to a recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool age children and tripled for children aged 6-11 years. In short, about 20 percent of children are obese. Our children here in Reading, Cornish, and Hartland are no exception.

As a child health advocate based in Brownsville, I encourage all Texas parents to use non-food alternatives when rewarding good behavior.

 

I reward my kids with a trip to the Reading library or more outside play time. Food is used to fuel our bodies, not to reward us for doing things we should be doing anyway.

Reading diets high in meat and low in plants are the reason we have higher rates of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. If you have been eating the SAD diet for the past 30 years, you probably ought to get your cholesterol checked.

How can we help our Reading kids eat more live foods? One of the best ways is to grow them yourself.

You can plant a garden in a yard, in containers on a deck or patio, or even in pots indoors. I have seen each of these types of gardens in my Reading neighborhood.
